Mosholu Preservation Corporation MPC
MPC Background & Mission Statement:
Mosholu Preservation Corporation (a support corporation of Montefiore Medical Center) is a Bronx based not-for-profit organization which was incorporated in the State of New York on December 2, 1981. The purposes of MPC are exclusively charitable and for the support of Montefiore Medical Center through the acquisition and rehabilitation of apartment buildings to promote housing opportunities for persons of low and moderate income in areas surrounding the Medical Center, to provide technical, administrative and other support and assistance to persons, groups and organizations that have among their purposes combating community deterioration, promoting economic and community development and the production of local news.
MPC, an independent not-for-profit corporation, got its start as a buyer and renovator of decaying property, and a catalyst for reinvestment in a strengthened private market. Over the past 31 years, with help from development projects and generous benefactors, it has since grown into a multi- directional force for preservation and pride in the northwest Bronx. Its influence is felt in the improved security Norwood residents find on their shopping strips and home streets; in clean, welcoming parks that provide places to play and congregate; in an award-winning newspaper that keeps residents informed on local news and community issues; and in countless other projects that contribute to making Norwood and surrounding areas a better place to live, work, shop, go to school, and relax. In addition, MPC conducts numerous neighborhood beautification projects at parks and green-spaces throughout the Northwest Bronx.
MPC also manages the Jerome Avenue-Gun Hill Road Business Improvement District (BID), which started with strong merchant organization support. The BID provides support to over 250 retail property and business owners. The BID provides supplemental services such as sanitation, graffiti removal, security, holiday lights and marketing.
Montefiore Medical Centers History:
Montefiore Medical Center was established in 1884 and named after the renowned nineteenth-century philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore. Montefiore's founders sought to create a much-needed source of care for persons with chronic illnesses such as tuberculosis, cancer and heart disease. Montefiore has changed greatly since its founding more than one hundred years ago. Today it is one of the largest health-care systems in the nation with four campuses and over 140 clinical locations. Montefiore is the University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a leading center for medical education and research. The evolution of the Montefiore Medical Center has been marked by important advances in treating diseases, caring for people and improving community health and welfare through support programs such as the Mosholu Preservation Corporation.
